PIAZZA ARMERINA – On Wednesday, March 18, 2026, this community will officially mark its place on the map of one of the world’s most prestigious pilgrimage networks. At 12:00 PM in Piazza Garibaldi, a formal ceremony will be held to inaugurate the Camino de Santiago Milestone (Pietra Miliare).
A Symbolic Bridge to Europe
The placement of this milestone signifies Piazza Armerina’s inclusion in the “Jacobean Route of the Mediterranean” (Rotta Jacopea del Mediterraneo). More than just a physical marker indicating the 2,671 km distance to Santiago de Compostela, the stone serves as a profound cultural and spiritual link, connecting local heritage to the vast European network of the Way of St. James.
Preserving Pilgrimage Tradition
This initiative is a collaborative effort between local authorities and cultural associations to honor the ancient tradition of pilgrimage. As noted in the official invitation, the milestone is a “symbolic sign of deep cultural and spiritual value,” aimed at uniting the local community with the grand European itinerary.
The ceremony will feature addresses by:
- Prof. Lucia Giunta, President of Borgo San Giacomo
- Atty. Nino Cammarata, Mayor of Piazza Armerina
- Ettore Messina, Councilor for Culture
